Bruce and Lesley Clow started using Nutritech more than 30 years ago when they took over the family property just South of Cambridge. “Back then it was called Danish Minerals, and they were the first company to supply mineral supplements and nutritional advice to kiwi farmers.  “As soon as we started using their Danmix™ free access licks we saw an immediate improvement in our animals’ health.”

The Clow’s philosophy has always been to breed good capacious cows and put plenty of feed in front of them, saying: "because we had no additional labour we always put more emphasis on per cow production."  To help them achieve good per cow production Clow drenched all his cows with Nutritech’s Flo Cal Mag™ in the spring.  “This gave them the extra calcium they needed to turn grass into milk.”  Clow found Flo Cal Mag™ easy to use and says the cows responded well to it, “They peaked at 27 litres in the spring and averaged 350kgs/Ms on grass alone.”  Clow also found that the additional magnesium in Flo Cal Mag™ meant that cows were quiet when they came into the shed and were less susceptible to grass staggers.  “The last thing you need is a cow to go down when you are milking by yourself in the spring!”

Throughout the rest of the year The Clows used Nutritech’s Aqua Trace™ range, a highly palatable total mineral vitamin supplement that disperses into the drinking water.  
We chose Aqua Trace™ because we wanted to put our supplements through a Dosatron.  We had no problems with the product clogging and the cows preferred to drink from the trough containing Aqua Trace™ than from any other source he says.

Although The Clows had been using high producing genetics on an all grass system for decades he never had problems getting his cows back into calf. “I would AB for one to two rounds and then leave the bull out until the end of December.”  The Clows didn’t used CIDRS, nor induced, but were still above district average for fertility.  “Our vet bills were virtually zero, if we ever called the vet, they knew there was something really wrong!”

Since retiring from the farm Bruce has maintained his involvement in cattle and is now the Senior Breeding Consultant for Genetic Enterprises and grazes heifers for his neighbour. Whilst he may not be milking, it seems old habits die hard!  After 30 years of farming he’s still trusts Nutritech to keep his animals healthy!
