Are you geared up for grass silage?

Managing the challenges of winter saved and spring pasture

spring pasture wa0002Winter saved and early spring pastures are often wet, with variable tonnage and contain higher dead matter at the base. Mowing height, time of harvest, wilting and weather are key points to consider when making silage and baleage.

These pastures create challenging and risky fermentations due to being higher protein, lower dry matter (DM)and containing varying levels of undesirable naturally occurring bacteria. The higher sugar content can also fuel bad bacteria. This is why we say first cut silage definitely needs a good inoculant. Preparing silage and baleage sites

Make sure storage sites are ready ahead of harvest.  For stack silage ensure the pad is even, clean and accessible for machinery. Stack site preparation allows you to compact the stack better, and reduces soil contamination of the stack. All of this helps reduce silage effluent run-off, protects the environment and improves feed out efficiency.

For baleage, think about a dry, firm and clear area that’s sheltered where baleage can be stacked or wrapped. Spraying out the area helps to reduce pest damage, especially from rodents.

A well-prepared site can be the difference between a reduced amount of losses or an expensive amount of wastage. For more information check out – site prep for silage article

Servicing and calibrating applicators

Silage inoculants help improve fermentation, retain nutrients and ensure we get a palatable feed for animals.

Before the season starts ensure your applicators are serviced, cleaned and in working order.

Calibrating applicators is important to ensure target application rates are met. Getting this right means we get good coverage and dispersion of the product. If you would like any help in calibrating your applicator feel free to reach out to us.

Getting geared up for grass silage is about planning and focusing on details to get the best outcomes for your silage.

Managing challenging pastures, ensuring your applicators are running efficiently and preparing sites ahead of time, make for a less stressful season with higher quality silage as a result.
