Managing Fodder Beet Feeding in Autumn for Dairy Cows

Managing Fodder Beet feeding in Autumn for optimal production and animal health.

It is well known that the gradual introduction of Fodder Beet (FB) into the diet of lactating dairy cows in Autumn is critical to maintaining milk production and preventing rumen acidosis. But, even in experienced and motivated operations, some cows may still experience digestive issues.

Preventing Rumen Acidosis: Rumen acidosis occurs when cows consume too much water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) or starch too quickly, causing a drop in rumen pH. This disrupts digestion and can lead to scouring, bloating, loss of condition, dehydration, and in severe cases, death. To minimise risk DairyNZ have useful tools to help plan a smooth transition “Transitioning and health risks – DairyNZ | DairyNZ “ which highlight the need for yield estimations, dry matter  and feed testing  to help allocate accurately and to balance up macro nutrients such as Calcium and Phosphorous.  Farmers seeking to understand their macro mineral requirements when introducing FB into the lactating diet can access free nutritional support from their local Nutritech Area Managers.

Tools for a successful transition: In addition to accurate yield and dry matter assessment to ensure correct allocation of FB, Levucell® SC, a live yeast probiotic, is an effective tool for managing rumen health when transitioning cows onto fodder beet. It works by:

  • Stabilising rumen pH, reducing the risk of acidosis.
  • Enhancing fibre digestion, improving overall feed utilisation.
  • Supporting beneficial rumen microbes helps cows adapt more quickly to diet changes.

The good news is that Levucell® SC is now even easier to incorporate into the FB transition program with a new range of silage balancers and fodder beet balancers, helping you to maintain consistent milk production, liveweight gains and reduce digestive disturbances during this tricky period.

If you would like to hear how Levucell® SC can help you manage FB transition on your farm call your local area manager for more information.
