Nick Waihi is the perfect Area Manager to help the farmers of Northland and Rodney. Having been a Northland farmer for over 32 years, he knows every aspect of the business, as well as the issues unique to the north.
In a typical week, Nick is on the land, giving support to farmers for the nutritional needs of their animals. Farmers can tell immediately that he’s one of them. Nick explains.
“As soon as I say, ‘How are the girls?’, farmers know that I care about the animals, and that I’ve been in their gumboots. I still am. I often pitch in to help my clients with milking when they’re short.”
As Area Manager for Nutritech, Nick’s job is to ensure animals are as healthy and productive as possible. Nutrition is the key. To provide effective feed support, Nick starts with the resources available on farm. Soil tests, along with silage and diet checks, often reveal where gains can be made.
Even though Nick’s job is to supply feed and nutritional products, he admits there’s not a pushy sales bone in his body.
“Farmers can tell when a rep is trying to get into their wallet. I could when I was farming. I’m too much on the side of the farmer to push products, so when I’m on with them, I simply ask questions and remain observant. If I can see how a Nutritech product will solve a problem, I’ll speak up. If not, I’ll wait for the farmer to come back to me.”
And they do. Nick has built up such high levels of trust, 70% of his sales come from farmers calling him for advice and support. It’s a sign that the relationships are solid.
When he’s not helping his rural friends, you’ll find Nick on the rugby league field. Mostly, that’s in the capacity of coach, where he helps develop a range of age group squads among the girls. Occasionally, Nick will ref an interstate match, and once a year, he’ll pull on a jersey and play in a Golden OIdies game. He loves it all.
“I’ve always been involved in the community. And the skills I’ve learned as a coach translate perfectly into my job for Nutritech. At the end of the day, it’s all about helping other people do good things.”
