ManurePro: Proven to Cut Mastitis Risk on Your Farm

Microbial Bedding Conditioner Shown to Support Udder Health and Reduce Mastitis Risk.

The dry period is a critical phase in a cow’s lactation cycle. New intramammary infections often occur due to changes in the udder environment and reduced bacteria flushing. Maintaining a clean, biologically balanced bedding surface is essential to reducing environmental mastitis risk during this time. In this study, researchers evaluated MANURE PRO, a microbial bedding conditioner composed of a specific blend of enzymes and beneficial bacteria, applied to bedding made from recycled manure solids (RMS). While RMS is a cost-effective and sustainable bedding option, it poses a higher microbial load, which can contribute to mastitis risk, particularly when hygiene is compromised.

Using high-resolution microbiota analysis (16S amplicon sequencing), the study showed that MANURE PRO application modified the microbial communities in the bedding, promoting beneficial bacteria while reducing populations of potential mastitis pathogens. Unlike untreated control bedding, bedding treated with MANURE PRO was not associated with mastitis-causing organisms. Similar patterns were observed on teat skin where control cows showed colonisation with potentially harmful microorganisms, while cows housed on treated bedding did not.

Importantly, these microbiological improvements were linked to lower somatic cell counts (SCC) in cows housed on MANURE PRO -treated bedding—suggesting a reduced inflammatory response and lower incidence of subclinical mastitis.

According to Dr. Lysiane Dunière, lead author of the study:

“The application of the microbial bedding conditioner positively influenced the bedding and teat skin microbiota. By reducing the presence of undesirable bacteria, particularly those associated with mastitis, the product contributes to improved udder health. These effects were reflected in consistently lower SCC levels in milk throughout the study period.”

The authors conclude that microbial bedding conditioners like MANURE PRO may offer a promising strategy to support udder health and reduce new intramammary infections during the dry period, ultimately contributing to better transition outcomes and reduced economic losses due to mastitis.

Manure Pro is produced by Lallemand, a world leader in the manufacture, research and sales of yeast and bacteria.
