Lallemand Inc. is a global manufacturer and distributor of yeasts and bacterial products for both human and animal nutrition with more than 2,500 yeast strains in their collection. In fact, if you drink wine in NZ there is a 50% chance you have consumed a wine made using a Lallemand specific yeast strain.
The Lallemand Animal Nutrition Division of Lallemand Inc. is a global leader in microbial fermentation producing yeast and bacteria specific for animal use. The two main brands of live yeast produced for animal use are Levucell® SB and Levucell® SC with Levucell® SB (Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079) specific for small intestine fermentation and function while Levucell® SC (Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077) is specific for rumen fermentation and function.
Since a newborn calf is a pre-ruminant, the role of both the rumen and the small intestine for nutrient digestion are equally important. To grow and wean a calf for milk or beef production, its important to ensure that both rumen function and small intestine function are supported to optimise nutrient digestion and absorption to the calf.
In the 1920’s native Indonesians found that drinking tea made from tropical fruits cured incidences of diarrhoea. In the 1960’s the strain of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 was identified in the fruits and was subsequently used as a human preventative for diarrhoea. In the 1990’s, research was conducted using Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 for pig nutrition and health and the brand Levucell® SB was registered by Lallemand. Since the turn of the century, similar research has been. A recent trial, published in the Journal of Dairy Science (Villot et al, 2016), showed how supplementation of Levucell® SB into calf milk replacer led to a decrease of diarrhoea in milk-fed veal calves and the faecal microbiota of diarrheic calves maintained a healthy community similar to non-diarrheic animals. This research supports the use of Levucell® SB into the Nutritech DanCalf® Gold milk additive product alongside its other benefits.

Levucell® SC is a rumen specific live yeast with over 80 peer reviewed scientific publications demonstrating its role in improving rumen function by promoting fibre digesting bacteria to improve fibre degradation and maintaining pH by minimising lactate utilising bacteria. While the use of Levucell® SC has been predominantly focussed on adult ruminants, its use in a pre-ruminant calf is of particular interest with respect to developing the rumen bacterial population to minimise the change when weaning the calf from a liquid milk to a solid feed.
The weaning change from liquid feed is a stressful time for the calf, both biologically and physically. The primary site of nutrient digestion shifts from the small intestine to the rumen and its important the calves’ rumen is ready to be able to digest grass. This is important, as early rumen development and pre-weaning growth rates are related to a reduction in gastric upsets at weaning, future growth performance in calves and future lactation performance. Failure of the rumen to be adequately formed, often results in the “weaning check” so often described when calves are weaned.
A trial conducted in NZ in 2013 and published in the Journal of Applied Animal Nutrition (Turney et al, 2017), showed that feeding Levucell® SC live yeast prevented the drop off in calf performance at weaning in terms of both feed intake and weight gain.
Incorporating Levucell® SC live yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077) into calf starter feeds can be an effective tool to transition calves smoothly from meal or pelleted feeds to pasture based systems. In doing this, we help set up the calves’ rumen for lifetime productivity from pasture based systems.
